Hiller signs with LA

2013-08-27

It was a risky move, but the Kings got it done.

After trading next year's 1st and 3rd round picks, as well as two quality prospects to Tampa Bay, the Kings were able to sign star goalie Jonas Hiller to a 4-year contract worth $24.4 million. GM McGrath weighed in on the signing.

"It was a little more than we initially wanted to pay for a contract, but goalies like Jonas never fall into your lap like this, so we had to ensure he would be part of our team in the future, especially with Ilya retiring after this season. We're very happy with how we've been able to revamp this team since we took control last offseason. We now have a great future in goal, we're very happy with our current defense situation and the prospects coming down the pipe. We know we need to address some concerns on offense, but we still feel we can be competitive and have some great rookies getting the call this year, so we'll see what they can do. This signing makes me very excited for the future."

Hiller's cap hit of $6.1 million after this season seems like a lot. However, with Byrzgalov's $5.7 million coming off the books, and the likelihood of McGrath letting some of his underperforming big-contract players go, the Kings should still be able to continue maintaining what is arguably one of the most flexible cap situations in the league.
